Sin Vagina, Me Marginan / Without a vagina, they marginalize me
(Peru – Wesley Verastegui – 2017)
This film is about Barbie, a well-educated (apart from being a thief, prostitute, cute, kind and very intelligent) transgender woman who needs 30,000 dollars for her sex change operation. However, she doesn’t have the sufficient funds. All she has is her wisdom, her tits and her friend “Microbio”, a loony tranny she found on the streets. So, after much brainstorming (and lots of golden rains too), they have no better idea than to kidnap a transphobic Minister’s daughter; and if he doesn’t fall for the blackmail, things will go wild. Between “Tangerine” and Almodovar’s “Pepi, Lucy y Bon”, this is the first Peruvian film recorded in its entirety from a Smartphone.

Chavela (EEUU – 2017)
Directed by Catherine Gund & Daresha Kyi
Through its lyrical structure, Chavela takes viewers on an evocative, thought-provoking journey through the iconoclastic life of game-changing artist Chavela Vargas. Centered around never before-seen interview footage of Chavela shot 20 years before her death in 2012, and guided by the stories in Chavela’s songs, and the myths and tales others have told about her – as well as those she spread about herself – the film weaves an arresting portrait of a woman who dared to dress, speak, sing, and dream her unique life into being. The film is a wonderful tribute to a queer icon.
Free and open to all. A drag queen host will add Latinx musical flavor to each night.
All films will be screened in Spanish with English subtitles, in partnership with The Theatre Offensive as part of the Espacio Abierto series.
